Bikram Yoga NYC has 7 yoga rooms spread across 4 locations in Manhattan. Each studio is equipped with full locker room and shower facilities for both Men and Women.
This is the most common misconception that prevents people from coming to a yoga class. Yoga is not about how flexible you are, but about strengthening your body and spine in all directions. All that matters is that you try the right way, go to your personal “edge” and you will get 100% of the benefit!
The room is intentionally heated to warm your muscles and allow you to work deeper and safer. The heat also heals, helps prevent injuries and promotes sweating which flushes toxins from your body.
No matter what your level of fitness, you will find Bikram yoga very challenging. Each posture combines flexibility, strength and balance to work your whole body from your bones to your skin. With presistence, patience and dedication, you can lose inches and develop muscle tone and strength that might never come from other forms of exercise.
There are unlimited benefits to Bikram yoga. It reduces stress, increases blood circulation and improves strength and flexibility. A regular practice (at least three times a week) can reduce the symptoms of many chronic diseases (i.e. arthritis, diabetes and thyroid disorders). It also promotes relaxation.
Women should wear shorts or thin cotton leggings and leotard, jog bra or halter top. Men should wear shorts or bathing trunks. Since the room is heated, you will want to wear something that you feel comfortable sweating in.
Since you will be sweating during class, be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after class. Including electrolytes in your hydration routine such as coconut water, watermelon juice or electrolyte supplements will make for a great class!
We recommend that you do not eat a full meal at least 2 hours before class. If you are hungry, however, we recommend a light snack such as a banana or energy bar.
We recommend that student remove any makeup and/or lotions before class. Many of the postures require students to grip their feet or legs, which can prove difficult when there is lotion on the body.
When class concludes you will be lying in Savasana on your back. Typically, a new student’s first reaction is to get get up and leave the room as soon as the instructor has finished. But hold on. Savasana is when your body gets to recuperate and recover. The longer you stay in savasana, the more your heart rate and breath returns to normal. It also helps to relieve stress and strain both mentally and physically and has incredible healing powers.
